Full Stack Developer Roadmap: Frontend and Backend Together
Full stack means being able to build a feature end-to-end - UI, API, and database - not necessarily equal depth in every layer. This roadmap covers both sides and where they connect.
Foundations
6-10 weeks- HTML, CSS, and JavaScript fundamentals
- A server-side language and runtime for your backend
- Git/GitHub and SQL fundamentals
- How a request actually flows from browser to server to database and back
Core skills
3-5 months- A frontend framework (React) plus a backend framework/runtime
- Designing and consuming REST APIs that connect the two
- Relational database design and an ORM
- Authentication implemented end-to-end (frontend + backend)
Specialize and ship
2-4 months- Deployment and basic CI/CD - actually getting a project live
- Pick one side (frontend polish or backend scaling) to go deeper on, matching the roles you want
- Build one or two complete projects end-to-end you can walk through in an interview
Job-ready polish
2-4 weeks- A portfolio showing full features, not just isolated frontend or backend snippets
- Interview practice across both layers: coding, API design, and basic system design
- Mock interviews to practice explaining how the pieces fit together
